We are a group of Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association (HKPA) members with a special interest in sports physiotherapy who are interested in keeping up-to-date with the latest development in sports physiotherapy and sports medicine. The objectives of SSG include facilitating physiotherapists in advancing their skills and knowledge in sport physiotherapy. SSG also aims at promoting health and safety of participants in sport at all levels, from recreational events to professional competitions.
The Roles of Physio in Sports
Registered physiotherapists work in sports specialty may be including but not limited to the following FIVE pillars to provide professional services:
Sport Injury Analysis (SIA) - The physio should critically analyse the mechanisms of sport injuries by evaluating the physiological, biomechanical and anatomical information of athletes with the use of updated/published knowledge and/or from current literature.
Sport Injury Prevention (SIP) - The physio should formulate the injury prevention strategies and training protocols for particular athletes with the application and implementation of principles of prehabilitation.
Sport Injury Management (SIM) - The physio should be able to manage on-the-field and off-the-field sport injuries with critical judgment based on the assessment and evaluation.
Sport Injury Rehabilitation (SIR) - The physio is required to plan, formulate, implement and demonstrate comprehensive rehabilitation programs for sport injuries by applying evidence and knowledge from scientific source.
Sport Performance Enhancement (SPE) - The physio can utilize sports and exercise principles to optimize sport performance by reducing fatigue/overuse and eliminating the movement dysfunctions with biomechanical and anatomical analysis.
